Digital Community of Practice

Welcome to the Digital Community of Practice (CoP). We are a growing community of digital doers and thinkers in Birmingham City Council.

We want to create a safe space to share, discuss and learn more about the work we do across the council. Together, we will work to digitally transform the services we offer to all those that use them.

Forums such as the CoP are useful for staff development. They help us to understand new working practices and how they can be used effectively.

What digital means

When we talk about digital, we do not just mean technology or the technical solution to a problem. In terms of digital transformation, this is much wider.

Tom Loosemore, ex-Deputy Director of Government Digital Service (GDS), gives a definition of digital that is widely accepted:

“[Digital is] Applying the culture, processes, business models and technologies of the internet era to respond to people’s raised expectations”

The Digital CoP is open to all staff and leaders with a role and interest in the development of digital capabilities.

There is a strong emphasis on knowledge transfer, learning from each other and sharing our expertise.

We are an open community from those that have an interest in digital to experienced practitioners (internal and external to BCC). Those who have not previously engaged in this area but would like to find out more are also welcome. Further information can be found in the Terms of Reference for the CoP
